About: Beauty~ Who Hijacked It?!

Today, Anna, Mom and I went to an oral surgeon to get our wisdom teeth checked out. While we were there, Anna and I sat down in the waiting room and decided to flip through one of the newest fashion magazines.
I tell you what... I'm continually shocked at how "beauty" is defined!

I'm curious...
who finds this look remotely attractive?
Let me know what you think.

I don't know about you, my readers, but if you have the same values I do, which I know many and pretty much all of you do, you find this style disturbing.

Have you ever wondered...

Why our culture's view of beauty is so distorted?
Who made the "experts" the experts?
Why the "experts" design things the way they do?
Why the models look like they're starving?
About the hollow look in their eyes?
The unattractive poses?
The lifestyles and why they're glorified?

I know that growing up in this, our American culture, style and fashion have been idolized.
It's been made into such a god that it's an all consuming factor in many people's lives!
People eat, breath, sleep, think, obsess over this god.

To me though...
Modern fashion is a freak show and total joke!
Outfits look like clown suits.
People look like Jokers.
Like they dressed in the dark and put their makeup on with their left hands (if their right handed, of course), standing on their heads under water!
Pleeease... don't even get me started on the hairstyles!
Seriously!

Beauty is distorted.
Just like sinful man.
Distorted.

I've heard it said before that the reason people find...

(modern art)
so attractive is because as sinful people, we are anti~God.
We fight against anything that is related to God and His plan.

Thus, true beauty is ugly and hideous is gorgeous!

"Well... what is true beauty?" some ask.

God defines beauty as such:

Psalm 96:9~NKJV
Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness! Tremble before Him, all the earth.

Proverbs 31:30~NKJV
Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised.

1 Peter 3:3-5~NKJV (italics to verse four added by me)
3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel— 4 rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. 5 For in this manner, in former times, the holy women who trusted in God also adorned themselves, being submissive to their own husbands...

Wow.
So different from our culture, eh?

So... to answer my question in the title, "Who hijacked beauty's definition?"
I say... sinful man.
Plain and simple.

Hope this made coherent sense :)
Let me know what you think!
Comments are greatly appreciated!

Thanks for reading and God bless!

I have been going over this in my college class...sad thing is they are so right in some areas (that fashion is an obsession and harmful) and so wrong in other areas (that things such as, same sex marriage, rape, beatings are cultural that can be and should be changed at a whim). Praying for my president and my nation!

Great thoughts, Emily, I totally agree. It's good to read it, and get it all straight in my mind again ... I think the dark shadowing of the eyes and the pale makeup and no smiles, it draws attention, and makes the viewer think of depression, angst, etc.

Heartbreaking to think that maybe it's what they feel inside too, to be so caught up in what is SEEN, instead of what is UNSEEN.

Thank you for writing this!
Love you,

I think it is an over plan by satan and we the people have gone along with it. First the trends were small steps toward a unisex type look. Then the clothes became even more unisex. Then the hair styles started. The goth look and the dark eye make up, etc. makes ugly and gross things seem "normal". I see it in other areas besides fashion. Look at toys. Have you walked down a toy aisle lately? The vile things that are sold there, the distorted dolls and action figures.... If we can make all of that seem "normal", we will have less of a chance of recognizing evil when it is near us. Just my humble opinion. :)

You're so right Emily. The way those models dressed...I'd laugh if it wasn't so sad and serious. These individuals are so empty and blind spiritually. Since our world has reject God (the One who makes us whole), they have to find something else to fill the void inside themselves. You're so right...this is not beautiful. The world is angry at God and wants to devalue anything that has His fingerprints on it (i.e. humanity). Just remember, they are blind; they cannot see the Truth. Great post yet again...keep it up :)

Jean~
I totally agree with your point that the inside is the same sad person that they look like!
I ♥ you!

Mrs. Marci~
Your point on the unisex clothing is another good one that I hadn't thought of! Thank you for pointing that out as well!

No, I haven't walked down the toy isles anytime lately... but I don't doubt the distortion.

I know it's so easy to become high minded in these things. I believe you probably pointed out my self~righteousness... thank you!
You're right, they are blind!

I was in such a tizzy when I wrote this post, I pretty much tossed graciousness out the window I guess!
Just another example of sinful mankind :) *sigh*
God is good to us, isn't He?
:)

T'is a beautiful thing
for a woman to admit her tizzy!

These women are just acting out in sadness and anger because they didn't have a daddy to guard & speak to their preciousness.
Can't you just see it? Hidden there beneath the mask.

You mean no one finds this attractive??? Hahaha JK

I think its true that most female dress tends in are culture are immodest and anti God. But you have to remember, a lot of those "fashion" magazines are made more and more ridiculous just to make people buy them! I bet the people that look at them have no desire to look like that. I think the whole "wow" factor is true for most people. It sells magazines. Sure you get your people that try to look that that. But I think the the bigger danger in our society is the point Mrs Marci brought up. Clothes that that men and women wear, unisex styling. It is rampant sin against God. Which is really sad because most main stream Christians are guilty of this.

Deuteronomy 22:5
A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this.

How many times have you heard this verse mentioned from a pulpit? Since male and female roles are also not preached, males are feminized and females are masculinized by the culture. Its a slippery sloop! I think God tells us in Deuteronomy 22:5 that men and women should have a completely different dress code. Amen?

One can see how the devil has the population in blindness. What God calls beautiful, the devil claims it horrible and everything abominable to God, the devil works in ways so that it looks beautiful to people. And we can be so easily pulled into the lie...if we don't keep our eyes on God and His Word!
